$7 Million Meliá Course is Ready and Waiting

by Landy Blank

The traveling golfer's dilemma—which course to play each day—has never been a problem in Costa Rica. For the past 25 years, if you wanted to play an 18-hole championship golf course here, you played at the Cariari Country Club.

With new 18-hole courses popping up in various parts of the country, the Cariari has lost that singular status. It will, however, continue to be what it has always been—a great golf course that challenges the best of golfers. Situated mid-way between San José and Juan Santamaria International Airport, the Cariari is a natural place to play when you first arrive in Costa Rica and, with proper planning, a great way to end your stay as well.

It was designed and built by well-known golf course architect, George Fazio, on land that was once a coffee plantation. This par 71 course measures 6,590 yards from the championship tees but plays much longer. You'd think the ball would really fly at 3,900 feet above sea level, but you can't prove it by me.
